Music Director Job Description
Reports to: Pastor
Hours per week: 15 to 16 Hours
Salary: Commensurate with experience
Vacation: 3 weeks including 3 Sundays
Continuing Education: 1 Week including 1 Sunday (at music director’s expense)
STAFF FUNCTIONS
- Maintains harmonious relationship with pastor, music participants, and commissions. Attends Worship, Administrative Council, and Committee meetings.
- Assists pastor in coordinating music and worship calendars, selects music.
- Oversees all music and coordinates with church programs.
- Communicates with newsletter editors and congregation.
- Complies with approved Musical Budget, e.g. for new music and guest musicians.
MUSIC RESPONSIBILITIES
- Directs choirs and other musicians for Sunday and special services.
- Plans and directs rehearsals for the various choirs and musicians.
- Directs and presents a diverse repertoire of vocal and instrumental music for church services.
- Advises parishioners on music selections for special occasions, e.g. weddings; may arrange for musicians.
- Recruits members for the various music groups.
- Works as music advisor as needed to children and youth ministry.
- Will work with Pastor and Worship Committee to develop and revise music program to meet new needs of congregation and community.
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES
- Responds to the needs and concerns of Choir members.
- Establishes and maintains professional contacts in the music community.
- Provides suitable replacements to cover for vacation or absence.
- Stays abreast of current trends and techniques in liturgical music.
Other considerations
Benefits: Since this is a part time job, there are no benefits other than vacation and one-week Continuing Education. Continuing Education will be at the expense of the Music Director. There is no additional paid-time off.
There will be a probationary period of 3 months.
If the Director wishes to leave in the future, he/she must give at least a month’s notice. If the time is within 2 months of Christmas or Easter, he/she must stay through the holiday.
